Twenty five years after their first visit, Taverham Band recently returned to the Rhineland area of Germany, performing a series of concerts. The tour coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Bands formation in 1974
The Band played to enthusiastic crowds in Rüdesheim and Bad Kreuznach ,finishing with a show in the Biergarten of Koblenz. The programme of music was designed to appeal to an international audience and also celebrate fifty years of entertaining.
The outside performances attracted large crowds who clapped, danced and sang along to tunes ranging from “Alexanders Ragtime Band” to songs by Abba and Queen.
Band President Paul Anderson commented “the Band worked very hard during the tour but still found time to relax, enjoying a Rhineland cruise and sampling wines from the Mosel Valley. ”
The Band was formed in 1974 when Alan Townsend advertised in a Taverham newsletter for people interested in forming a band. Initially eighteen people responded and together they raised funds to purchase some ancient instruments. Since then they have performed thousands of shows and have built a reputation for fine musicianship and entertainment. They first toured Germany in 2000 and have also performed at HM Queens Garden Party Sandringham, Windsor Castle, the Menin Gate in Belgium and a Fred Olsen Norwegian Fjords cruise
For the past 40 years they have been led by their musical director Ian Colman MBE who commented about this year’s tour, “we were made so welcome and the crowds were very enthusiastic. It was a honour to share our celebration with the people of Germany and tourists from around the world. We had a great time and look forward to many more years of entertaining”
