As we arrive in October it is a chance for the band to reflect on a very busy summer. After the highlight of playing at Windsor Castle, we went on to play to several thousand Scouts and Guides at the famous Norjam event at the showground. This was a marvellous evening with band thumping out tunes to send the young crowd into a frenzy. A party atmosphere ensued to tunes such as “Amarillo” and “500 miles”. What a night everyone had!
The day before we had the honour of playing at Cromer Carnival. A large audience heard the band in the amazing acoustics of Cromer church. It is never easy taking a thirty-piece band on the road midweek. Here is a flavour of what is involved
The percussion section arrived early and most had to sneak away from work early to achieve it. Before the set up, we headed for the sea front to enjoy a fish and chip supper. Then it was time to set up Taverham Band’s large percussion section. There is an array of Timpanis, xylophones, glocks and a full drum kit to get into the church. This set up is the envy of many other Brass Bands.
The rest of the band then arrives to set up the stands and, normally, the music stand lights (on this occasion the lights did not make it for reasons unknown!). Hence the concert commenced with the band studying the music “extra hard” under the lights of the church! This concentration only seemed to enhance the concert as the band ripped through an amazing selection of tunes.
This included Mission Impossible, Bewitched, Out of the Blue (Radio’s football results tune!), Star Wars, Mama Mia and the rousing 633 Squadron. The finale was the very fast version of Lord of the Dance which sent the carnival crowd home happy. After the show it is the big clear up, before the band headed home for a well-deserved sleep. If you have not heard the band before, we would love to see you – check out our next gigs by clicking here.
