Ian’s Update September 2015

Well you find us hanging on to what has been a very busy summer for the band ! We have been to various events around the county including Bawdeswell, Upton, Gorleston and Chapelfield Gardens.

I do hope you were able to come along to Chapelfield – we are lucky in Norwich to have such a well-preserved bandstand, set in lovely grounds. There is something very British about strolling through a garden with the sound of a brass band echoing through the trees. Whilst there are people who attend the gardens to hear the band, there are many who simply unexpectedly find us on the day and stay for the whole concert. We get such great feedback from these events and it is so important that the Norwich City Council keep these events going. Please let them know if you enjoyed it!

On the social side we celebrated musician Peter Almond’s Birthday.  He is now 87 and continues to play an active part in the Band. He was, of course, resident trumpet player at the Hippodrome Theatre in St Giles, Norwich (sadly now a car park, and only a blue plaque reminds of this great theatre) and has so many stories of the big names he supported.

Turning to the Autumn, our concerts at Taverham Village Hall will be held on Fri/Sat 16th & 17th October when we shall be playing a fantastic range of music including a tribute to Elvis (who would be celebrating his 80th birthday this year) and also to two iconic figures lost to the world of music in 2015, namely James Last and the film composer James Horner.  Horner (whose music has featured in the biggest screen blockbusters including ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’) was tragically killed in a plane accident in June, just weeks after conducting his Titanic score at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
